Smart Automobile is a division of Daimler AG that designs, manufactures and markets microcars. Headquartered in Böblingen, Germany, Smart has its primary assembly plant in Hambach, France.

The design concept for Smart’s automobiles began in the late 1980s, associated with Swatch. After a period of backing byVolkswagen, the first model was finally launched by Daimler-Benz in October 1998. Several variants on the original design have been introduced, with the original design, called the Fortwo, now in its second generation and available as an electric version.

Smart models are marketed globally, including in Asia, North and South America, Australia and in Europe—and have been the basis for conversions and design modifications by third parties, including electric conversions and performance upgrades.Brabus-tuned production models are widely available

1980’s – CEO Nicolas Hayek decided that he wanted a car to bear the company’s name, Smart actually stands for Swatch Mercedes Art. It was Daimler Benz who finally decided to green light the project.

1994 – new factory was built in a place names Smart Ville in Hambach, France.

Swatch and Mercedes entered a conflict over design and overall performances of the future car. So, before the car was even done, Swatch pulled out, leaving Mercedes to complete the project.

1998 – new Smart city-Coupé stirred a lot of enthusiasm from people in all 9 countries it was being sold.

1999 – MCC GmbH changed its name to MCC smart GmbH.


2003 – Mercedes launched two more Smarts, the Roadster and the Roadster Coupe

2004 – Smart Forfour, a slightly bigger Smart came on the market.

2006 – Dwindling sales and heavy financial losses, smart GmbH was liquidated and its operations were absorbed by DaimlerChrysler directly.

2014 Smart now operates under the Mercedes-Benz Cars division of Daimler car
